Where to go and what to see.
With close to 10 national parks, Uganda provides a wide range of game. Some national parks neighbor each other and animals there tend to be on the move, alternating from one to the other due to climatic seasons. We will get you to the parks according to your viewing preferences.
Kibale National Park
Located 26km southeast of fort portal town, Kibale National park is a place of scenic beauty. Its composition of natural tropical forest cover makes it home to a variety of plants and animals, with a predominance of chimpanzees.
Park weather and terrain.
This 795sq km park has very favorable climate all the year round, with temperatures averaging 14-27 degrees C. though it gets quite damp during the periods March-May and September-November.
At kibale, you will be guaranteed to encounter a variety of plants and animals, owing to the varying altitude. Find here moist evergreen forest on the fort portal plateau and tropical forest. At some points you will be lucky to see the sun rays peep through the dense canopy, formed by trees that rise to 55 meters. The dense undergrowth makes a pleasant challenge, with a variety of herbs, shrubs and ferns.
The biggest attraction in Kibale is our closest cousin the chimpanzee. At a count of 1450, this is the largest presence of these endangered animals in Uganda. There is a lot to learn from these animals in their natural surrounding; how they live in communities akin to ours and their social organization, and how they can coexist with the other lesser primates that are also in their numbers like the red colobus monkey, the black and white colobus monkey, the blue monkey, grey cheeked mangabey, olive baboon, the bush baby and the potto.
Most of the movement in kibale is on foot, so ensure you do not miss the 12km forest hike. This walk that is restricted to the dry seasons of November-February and June-September traverses the park’s varied habitats like the tropical rainforests, riverine forest, swamp and grassland. Grab this opportunity to see a variety of birds and primates enroute or with some lack the graceful duiker and the bushbuck.
Bring along your little ones as well if you can because they are fully catered for.childrens forest walks are organized by the rangers, where the little ones get the opportunity of being physically involved and learning about their ecosystem.
